Darjeeling Base Camp → Yuksom → Tshoka → Dzongri → Gochela → Yuksom
15 Days | Challenging | Highest Altitude: approx. 4,600/4900 m
Begin your Himalayan journey from Darjeeling Base Camp and venture deep into the high mountains of West Sikkim on our Gochela Trek. This demanding Himalayan adventure takes you beyond the renowned Dzongri meadows toward the high-altitude landscapes of Goechala, combining scenic mountain drives, dense Himalayan forests, alpine valleys, dramatic mountain ridges and spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga range.
The journey takes you from Darjeeling to the historic trailhead of Yuksom before following the classic route through Tshoka, Dzongri and the high mountain landscapes beyond. As the trail gains altitude, the forests gradually give way to alpine meadows and rugged high-mountain terrain, culminating at Goechala at approximately 4,900 metres. From the high points along the route, trekkers are rewarded with magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru and other great peaks of the Eastern Himalaya.
With carefully planned trekking stages, acclimatization and gradual altitude gain, the Goechala Trek is designed for experienced and physically prepared trekkers seeking a deeper Himalayan adventure. More demanding than the Dzongri Trek, it offers an immersive journey into the high mountains of Sikkim and an unforgettable approach toward the Kanchenjunga massif.

WHY CHOOSE THE GOCHELA TREK WITH THE GREAT HIKES ?
A Deeper Journey into the High Himalayas
The Gochela Trek is more than a trek to approximately 4,900 metres. It is a demanding journey deep into the high mountains of West Sikkim, through ancient forests, alpine meadows, high-altitude valleys and dramatic Himalayan terrain. At The Great Hikes, we design the experience around thoughtful pacing, local knowledge, careful planning and a genuine respect for the mountains.
Start from Darjeeling Base Camp
Your Himalayan journey begins at our Darjeeling Base Camp, providing a dedicated starting point for your expedition into Sikkim. From Darjeeling, we coordinate the transition to Yuksom and the trailhead, allowing you to begin your trek with the essential briefing, preparation and logistics in place.
Experienced Local Himalayan Leaders
Trek with experienced local Himalayan leaders who know the trails, terrain and changing mountain conditions of Sikkim. Their knowledge of the region helps provide practical guidance throughout the journey while adding a deeper understanding of the landscapes and communities you encounter along the trail.
Carefully Planned Acclimatization
At altitudes approaching 5,000 metres, acclimatization is an essential part of the Goechala experience. Our itinerary incorporates gradual altitude gain, appropriate trekking stages and planned rest and acclimatization to allow your body time to adjust as you progress from the lower forests toward the high mountains.
Beyond Dzongri — Into the High Mountains
Gochela takes you beyond the celebrated landscapes of Dzongri into a more remote and demanding high-altitude environment. The trail continues through alpine terrain toward the Goechala viewpoint, where the character of the Eastern Himalaya becomes increasingly dramatic.
Face-to-Face with Kanchenjunga
One of the defining highlights of the journey is the extraordinary mountain panorama toward the Kanchenjunga massif. Along the high-altitude sections, views open toward Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru and the surrounding peaks, creating some of the most memorable mountain scenery in Sikkim.
A True High-Altitude Himalayan Adventure
The GochelaTrek demands commitment, preparation and physical endurance. Long trekking days, steep ascents, changing weather and high-altitude terrain make this a more demanding adventure than the Dzongri Trek. For well-prepared trekkers, the reward is an immersive journey deep into the Sikkim Himalaya.
Beyond the Crowds
We believe the Himalayas are best experienced on foot and at a natural pace. The Gochela route takes you away from the lower mountain settlements and deep into forests, alpine landscapes and high mountain valleys, allowing the character of the Himalayas to unfold gradually with every stage of the journey.
Responsible Himalayan Travel
We encourage responsible trekking practices throughout the journey. Respecting local communities, minimizing waste, protecting fragile mountain environments and following established trails are integral to the way we travel through the Himalayas.
A Personal Trekking Experience
We believe a great Himalayan journey is measured by more than reaching a destination. It is also found in the quiet moments along the trail — a sunrise over the mountains, a forest path beneath ancient trees, the first sight of Kanchenjunga, or standing among the high Himalayan landscapes beyond Dzongri.
THE GREAT HIKES PROMISE
Local Knowledge. Thoughtful Planning. High-Altitude Preparation. Authentic Himalayan Adventure.
From Darjeeling Base Camp to Yuksom, through Dzongri and onward toward Gochela, every stage of the journey is carefully considered to help you experience the high Himalayas with preparation, purpose and respect.

GOCHELA TREK, SIKKIM - PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BEST TIME TO TREK
SPRING - MARCH TO MAY : Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming rhododendrons to the mountain forests, making this one of the most scenic periods on the trail.
AUTUMN - OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER : Autumn generally offers crisp mountain conditions and excellent visibility of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
MONSOON : Heavy rainfall can make trails wet and slippery and may increase the risk of landslides. Sikkim Tourism specifically advises avoiding the monsoon period for travel in this region.
ALTITUDE & ACCLIMATIZATION
The Gochela Trek begins at approximately 1,780 m in Yuksom and gradually ascends through Tshoka and Dzongri into the higher Himalayan terrain of West Sikkim. The route reaches Dzongri Top at approximately 4,200 m before continuing toward the Goechala region, where the designated viewpoint may reach approximately 4,600–4,900 m, depending on the route, conditions and local access.
At these elevations, trekkers may experience colder temperatures, strong winds, lower oxygen levels and rapidly changing mountain weather. Our itinerary incorporates gradual altitude gain, planned rest and acclimatization opportunities to support a measured approach to high-altitude trekking.
