A Deeper Journey into the Heart of the Himalayas
The Everest Base Camp Trek is more than a journey to the foot of the world's highest mountain. It is an unforgettable adventure into Nepal's legendary Khumbu region, through traditional Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries, rhododendron forests, high-altitude valleys and spectacular glacial landscapes beneath the world's most iconic Himalayan peaks.
At The Great Hikes, we believe a great Himalayan expedition begins with thoughtful planning, local knowledge, careful acclimatization and a genuine respect for the mountains. Our Everest Base Camp journey is designed to bring you closer to the landscapes, culture and spirit of the Himalayas while preparing you for the challenges of high-altitude trekking.
Start Your Himalayan Journey in Kathmandu
Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, Nepal's vibrant capital and gateway to the Himalayas. From pre-trek preparations and essential briefings to the journey toward Lukla, we help coordinate the key arrangements that set the foundation for your Everest Base Camp expedition.
Experienced Local Himalayan Leaders
Trek through the Khumbu with experienced local trekking leaders who understand the mountain trails, terrain and changing conditions of the Everest region. Their knowledge helps you navigate the journey with practical guidance while offering valuable insights into the traditions, culture and mountain life of the Sherpa communities.
Carefully Planned Acclimatization
At altitudes exceeding 5,000 metres, acclimatization is essential. Our itinerary incorporates planned acclimatization stages and a gradual ascent to help your body adjust to the decreasing oxygen levels as you progress toward Everest Base Camp. Appropriate pacing, awareness of altitude-related symptoms and flexibility when conditions require are important parts of responsible high-altitude trekking.
Into the Legendary Khumbu Region
Follow the historic trekking trails from Lukla through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche. Each stage reveals a different side of the Everest region, from lush river valleys and suspension bridges to windswept alpine settlements and rugged landscapes shaped by glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks.
Face-to-Face with Mount Everest
The defining moment of the journey is reaching Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 metres (17,598 feet). Stand beneath the immense Khumbu Icefall, surrounded by the dramatic mountain terrain that forms the starting point for expeditions to the summit of Everest. Along the trail, take in extraordinary views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and other Himalayan giants.
For an even more memorable mountain panorama, an early-morning ascent of Kala Patthar, approximately 5,545 metres (18,192 feet), offers one of the classic viewpoints for observing Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan skyline.
A True High-Altitude Himalayan Adventure
The Everest Base Camp Trek demands physical preparation, determination and respect for the challenges of altitude. Long walking days, steep ascents, cold temperatures and rugged mountain trails make this a challenging undertaking. For well-prepared trekkers, the reward is an extraordinary journey into one of the world's most celebrated mountain regions.
Beyond the Trails — Discover Sherpa Culture
The Everest region is not defined by its mountains alone. From the lively mountain hub of Namche Bazaar to the spiritual atmosphere of Tengboche Monastery, the journey offers opportunities to discover Sherpa traditions, Buddhist heritage, local hospitality and the resilience of communities living in the high Himalayas.
Responsible Himalayan Travel
We encourage responsible trekking practices throughout the expedition. Respecting local customs, supporting mountain communities, minimizing waste, conserving resources and following established trails are integral to travelling responsibly through the fragile Himalayan environment.
A Personal Trekking Experience
We believe a great Himalayan journey is measured by more than reaching a destination. It is also found in the quiet moments along the trail — a sunrise over Ama Dablam, prayer flags moving in the mountain wind, the first distant sight of Everest, or the unforgettable experience of standing amid the immense glacial landscapes of the Khumbu.
THE GREAT HIKES PROMISE
Local Knowledge. Thoughtful Planning. High-Altitude Preparation. Authentic Himalayan Adventure.
From Kathmandu to Lukla, through Namche Bazaar and the high mountain settlements of the Khumbu, onward to Everest Base Camp and the panoramic heights of Kala Patthar, every stage of the journey deserves careful consideration. With The Great Hikes, prepare to experience the Himalayas with purpose, determination and respect for the mountains.

Difficulty: Challenging
The Everest Base Camp Trek is a challenging high-altitude adventure designed for fit and well-prepared trekkers who are comfortable walking for several consecutive days across varied mountain terrain. Previous trekking experience is beneficial but not essential for individuals with good endurance and adequate preparation.
The combination of sustained walking, increasing altitude, cold conditions and long trekking days requires cardiovascular fitness, stamina and disciplined pacing. A well-planned itinerary with appropriate acclimatization is essential for managing altitude-related risks and improving the overall trekking experience.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is suitable for fit and well-prepared adventure seekers who are comfortable with consecutive days of trekking, long walking hours and high-altitude mountain terrain. Reaching Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 m (17,598 ft) requires good physical fitness, proper preparation and careful acclimatization. Previous trekking experience is beneficial, particularly for those unfamiliar with high-altitude environments.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is best undertaken during spring and autumn, when weather conditions are generally more favourable for trekking, mountain views and high-altitude travel. SPRING — MARCH TO MAY Spring offers milder daytime temperatures, longer daylight hours and spectacular views of the Himalayan landscape. Lower sections of the trail come alive with blooming rhododendrons, while Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks create a magnificent backdrop. This is also a popular season for Everest climbing expeditions. AUTUMN — SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER Autumn is one of the best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Following the monsoon, the skies generally become clearer, offering excellent visibility of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse and other Himalayan giants. October and November are particularly popular for their crisp mountain air and panoramic views. WINTER — DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY Winter offers quieter trails and potentially clear mountain views, but temperatures can fall well below freezing, particularly at higher elevations. Snowfall, icy trails and harsh weather may affect the trekking experience and accessibility of some sections. Winter departures require suitable equipment and careful planning. ALTITUDE & ACCLIMATIZATION The Everest Base Camp Trek begins at Lukla, approximately 2,860 m above sea level, and follows the Dudh Koshi valley through Phakding and Namche Bazaar before continuing towards Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. The trek reaches Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 m (17,598 ft). Many itineraries also include an early-morning ascent of Kala Patthar, approximately 5,545 m (18,192 ft), offering exceptional views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. At these elevations, the reduced availability of oxygen places additional demands on the body. Trekkers may experience cold temperatures, strong winds, fatigue, disturbed sleep and altitude-related symptoms. Our itinerary incorporates planned acclimatization opportunities and a gradual ascent to help trekkers adapt to increasing elevation. Important Acclimatization Guidelines Maintain a steady, comfortable walking pace and avoid unnecessary exertion. Follow the planned itinerary, including designated acclimatization days. Drink fluids regularly and eat sufficient, nourishing meals. Allow adequate time for rest and recovery. Inform your trekking leader immediately if you develop symptoms such as a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Never continue ascending when experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness without appropriate assessment. Descend promptly and seek medical assistance if serious altitude-related symptoms develop. Acclimatization is essential, but it cannot eliminate the risk of altitude sickness. Good physical fitness does not guarantee protection against altitude-related illness. The itinerary may need to change in response to a trekker's condition, weather or other safety considerations. PHYSICAL PREPARATION Begin preparing several weeks to a few months before your departure, depending on your current fitness level and trekking experience. The Everest Base Camp Trek involves consecutive days of walking, sustained uphill sections, steep descents and extended periods at high altitude. Building endurance gradually will help you manage the physical demands of the journey. Recommended Training Regular walking and hiking: Build up your walking duration and distance progressively. Stair climbing: Improve leg strength and endurance for sustained ascents. Cardiovascular exercise: Include activities such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming. Strength training: Focus on the legs, hips, core and overall stability. Backpack training: Practise walking with a lightly loaded backpack similar to the one you will carry on the trek. Recovery: Allow adequate rest between training sessions to reduce the risk of injury. The goal is endurance, not speed. Being able to walk comfortably for several hours on consecutive days is more useful than completing a short distance at a fast pace. A well-prepared trekker is better equipped to enjoy the journey, manage fatigue and maintain a consistent pace throughout the expedition. WEATHER & TEMPERATURE Mountain weather in the Everest region can change quickly. Conditions vary considerably between lower valleys, exposed ridges and high-altitude locations such as Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp. Depending on the season and elevation, you may encounter: Bright sunshine and strong ultraviolet radiation Rain and wet trails at lower elevations Fog and cloud cover that reduce visibility Cold winds and exposed mountain conditions Frost and freezing overnight temperatures Snowfall and icy trail sections Significant temperature drops after sunset Delays caused by adverse weather and flight conditions Temperatures at higher elevations can fall well below freezing, especially at night and during early-morning excursions to Kala Patthar. Essential Clothing & Equipment A suitable layering system is essential for managing changing temperatures throughout the trek. We recommend carrying: Moisture-wicking base layers Warm insulating layers, including fleece or down A waterproof and windproof outer jacket and trousers Warm trekking trousers Insulated gloves and warm headwear A sun hat and UV-protective sunglasses Comfortable, well-broken-in trekking boots A warm sleeping bag suitable for the expected conditions, if not supplied as part of your package Your final packing list should be based on the season, the itinerary and the equipment included in your trekking package. ACCOMMODATION The Everest Base Camp Trek follows an established mountain route with accommodation primarily in local teahouses and trekking lodges. These provide a practical and welcoming place to rest, eat and recover after each day's walk. Kathmandu Accommodation in Kathmandu may be arranged before and after the trek, depending on your selected package. Options can be discussed according to your itinerary, preferred comfort level and budget. Along the Trekking Route Lukla and Phakding: Teahouses and lodges offering basic to comfortable facilities. Namche Bazaar: A larger mountain settlement with a range of lodges, guesthouses and dining facilities. Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche: Mountain teahouses with increasingly basic facilities as the trail gains altitude. Gorak Shep: Basic high-altitude lodge accommodation near the final approach to Everest Base Camp. Accommodation Facilities Rooms are generally arranged on a twin-sharing basis, subject to availability. Toilets and bathrooms may be shared, particularly at higher elevations. Hot showers and charging facilities may be available at additional cost. Heating is generally limited, and bedrooms can become very cold at night. Facilities become more basic and availability more limited at higher elevations. Accommodation standards vary by location, season and lodge availability. Private rooms cannot always be guaranteed during busy trekking periods. The experience reflects the character of the Everest region, where warm hospitality, local mountain culture and practical teahouse facilities form an integral part of the journey. FOOD & MEALS Meals during the Everest Base Camp Trek are generally served at the teahouses and lodges along the route. The menu typically combines traditional Nepali dishes with familiar Indian and international options. The availability of particular dishes varies by location, season and lodge. As you gain altitude, menus may become simpler and food prices generally increase because supplies must be transported into the mountains. Our Approach to Trekking Meals At The Great Hikes, we encourage trekkers to eat regularly, stay hydrated and choose nourishing meals that support the physical demands of high-altitude walking. Dal bhat, a traditional Nepali meal of rice, lentils and accompaniments, is a popular choice among trekkers because it provides a substantial source of energy. Vegetarian options are widely available, although the variety of fresh produce and other ingredients may decrease at higher elevations. Please inform us in advance about any dietary requirements or food allergies so that we can discuss the available arrangements. Meal inclusions depend on the selected trekking package. Your final itinerary and booking confirmation will specify which meals are included and which are payable directly at the teahouses. PERMITS & DOCUMENTS REQUIRED The Everest Base Camp Trek takes place in the Khumbu region of Nepal, following established trails through the Sagarmatha National Park area. For the standard Everest Base Camp route via Lukla, trekkers generally require the following two permits: Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit Permit requirements, fees and procedures may change. The Great Hikes will confirm the applicable requirements for your departure before the trek. FOR INDIAN NATIONALS Indian trekkers should carry: A valid Indian passport or another identity document accepted for the relevant travel and entry procedures. Appropriate identification for flights and other transport arrangements. Passport-size photographs, if required for the applicable permit procedures. Copies of relevant travel documents. Any additional documentation requested by the trekking operator or issuing authorities. Indian citizens do not generally require a Nepal tourist visa, but accepted identification requirements can differ depending on the mode of travel and the service provider. Confirm the appropriate documents before departure, especially if travelling by air. FOR OTHER INTERNATIONAL NATIONALS International trekkers should carry: A valid passport. A valid Nepal visa, where required for their nationality. Copies of passport identification pages and visa documentation, where applicable. Passport-size photographs, if required by the relevant authorities. Any additional documentation required for permit processing. Most international visitors can obtain a Nepal tourist visa through the applicable visa-on-arrival or advance-visa procedures, subject to nationality-specific requirements and current regulations. HEALTH & SAFETY Your Safety Comes First At The Great Hikes, your safety and well-being are our priority. The Everest Base Camp Trek takes you deep into the high Himalayas, where altitude, weather and trail conditions can change quickly. The combination of prolonged walking, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen availability requires careful preparation and responsible decision-making. Our trekking team follows a considered approach to the journey, with appropriate pacing, planned acclimatization opportunities and attention to the well-being of participants. Our Safety Priorities Gradual Ascent: Following an itinerary designed to allow time for altitude adaptation. Experienced Trekking Leadership: Guidance from the designated trekking leader throughout the journey. Regular Communication: Encouraging trekkers to report symptoms, injuries or concerns promptly. Weather Awareness: Adjusting plans when conditions affect the safety or feasibility of the route. Responsible Decision-Making: Modifying the itinerary or arranging descent when necessary. Emergency Planning: Identifying appropriate options for medical assistance and evacuation, subject to local conditions and availability. Important Health Considerations Trekkers should consult a qualified healthcare professional before departure if they have concerns about their fitness for high-altitude travel or any pre-existing medical conditions. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness or trekking experience. Recognising symptoms early and responding appropriately is essential. Serious symptoms, including difficulty breathing at rest, confusion, loss of coordination or a worsening headache accompanied by other symptoms, require urgent medical assessment and descent where indicated. Travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking at the elevations planned for your itinerary, as well as emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation where available. Check the policy limits, exclusions and conditions carefully before purchasing cover. RESPONSIBLE TREKKING The Everest region is home to remarkable mountain landscapes, traditional Sherpa communities, monasteries and a fragile high-altitude ecosystem. At The Great Hikes, we believe that responsible trekking means respecting the people, culture and natural environment that make the journey possible. Trekkers Are Expected To Follow the instructions of the trekking leader. Stay with the group and follow the agreed itinerary. Remain on established trails wherever possible. Avoid walking alone, particularly in remote or high-altitude sections. Respect local customs, religious sites and community traditions. Treat local residents, guides, porters and lodge staff with respect. Carry personal waste responsibly and use designated disposal facilities. Minimise single-use plastics wherever practical. Respect wildlife and avoid disturbing natural habitats. Follow national park regulations and local guidance. Responsible travel helps preserve the character of the Everest region and supports a more meaningful experience for everyone involved. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY A safe trek is a shared responsibility. Before joining the Everest Base Camp Trek, please ensure that you are physically prepared, have appropriate clothing and equipment, carry any necessary personal medication and have suitable travel insurance. You are also responsible for: Disclosing relevant health concerns to your trekking leader. Following safety instructions and acclimatization guidance. Reporting symptoms of altitude sickness or injury without delay. Maintaining a realistic pace and avoiding unnecessary exertion. Following the trekking leader's decisions when safety requires a change of plan. Our goal is simple: to help you experience the Himalayas with confidence, care and respect, while prioritising your well-being throughout the journey. BEFORE THE TREK Preparation begins well before you arrive in the Everest region. The Great Hikes will provide guidance regarding the itinerary, recommended equipment, essential documentation, permit arrangements and other practical requirements for your departure. The journey offers spectacular views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. 2. What is the highest altitude of the Everest Base Camp Trek? Everest Base Camp is situated at approximately 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) above sea level. Many itineraries also include an early-morning ascent of Kala Patthar at approximately 5,545 metres (18,192 ft), offering exceptional panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding mountains. 3. What is the grade of the Everest Base Camp Trek? The Everest Base Camp Trek is graded Challenging. It involves consecutive days of walking, sustained ascents and descents, rocky mountain trails, high-altitude conditions and long trekking hours. Although technical climbing skills are not required, good physical fitness, preparation and careful acclimatization are essential. 4. Is the Everest Base Camp Trek suitable for beginners? Yes, the Everest Base Camp Trek can be suitable for first-time Himalayan trekkers who are physically fit, adequately prepared and comfortable with several consecutive days of walking. Previous trekking experience is beneficial but not essential. A properly planned itinerary, gradual ascent and appropriate acclimatization are particularly important for beginners. 5. What is the best time for the Everest Base Camp Trek? Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are generally the preferred seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons at lower elevations and opportunities to experience the Everest climbing season. Autumn is known for generally clearer skies and excellent Himalayan visibility, particularly during October and November. Winter trekking is possible with appropriate preparation, while the monsoon season can bring rain, cloud cover, landslides and flight disruptions. Weather conditions vary, and all departures remain subject to prevailing mountain conditions. 6. What type of accommodation is provided during the trek? Accommodation along the Everest Base Camp route is primarily in local teahouses and mountain lodges. Rooms are generally arranged on a twin-sharing basis, subject to availability. Kathmandu accommodation may be included or arranged separately, depending on your selected package. At higher elevations, facilities become more basic, and bathrooms may be shared. Hot showers, charging facilities and Wi-Fi may be available at additional cost, depending on the lodge. 7. Are meals included during the Everest Base Camp Trek? Meal inclusions depend on the selected trekking package. Meals along the trail are generally available at teahouses and may include traditional Nepali dal bhat, rice dishes, noodles, soups, eggs, porridge and familiar Indian and international options. Your booking confirmation will specify which meals are included. Additional snacks, drinks and meals not covered by the package may need to be paid for separately. 8. What permits and documents are required for the Everest Base Camp Trek? The standard Everest Base Camp route generally requires a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit. Indian nationals should carry valid identification accepted for their travel arrangements and relevant checkpoints. International visitors should carry a valid passport and the appropriate Nepal visa, where required. Additional photographs or documentation may be requested during permit processing. The Great Hikes will advise you regarding the applicable permits, documentation and arrangements for your departure. Requirements and fees may change, so these will be confirmed before the trek. 9. Is mobile network and internet connectivity available during the trek? Mobile network coverage and internet connectivity are available in some settlements but become less reliable as you travel deeper into the mountains. Connectivity varies by location, network provider and weather conditions, and may be unavailable for extended periods. We recommend carrying a fully charged power bank, keeping essential documents accessible offline and informing family or friends in advance that communication may be limited during the trek. Charging and Wi-Fi services at teahouses may incur additional fees. 10. What should I pack for the Everest Base Camp Trek? Essential equipment includes sturdy trekking boots, moisture-wicking base layers, warm insulating layers, a down or insulated jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, thermal clothing, gloves, a warm hat, trekking poles, a headlamp, UV-protective sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottles, personal medication and a power bank. A suitable sleeping bag may also be required, depending on your package and accommodation arrangements. Because the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 metres, appropriate cold-weather clothing and reliable trekking equipment are essential. The Great Hikes will provide a detailed packing list and equipment guidance before departure. 11. How does The Great Hikes manage health, safety and acclimatization? Safety is a priority throughout the Everest Base Camp Trek. The itinerary incorporates planned acclimatization opportunities, a measured ascent and responsible pacing to help trekkers adapt to increasing altitude. Our trekking team provides guidance throughout the journey, carries appropriate first-aid supplies and responds to reported health concerns. If necessary, The Great Hikes will coordinate appropriate medical assistance or evacuation, subject to local conditions and service availability. Trekkers should immediately inform the trekking leader about symptoms such as persistent headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue, difficulty breathing or other concerning changes in their condition. Serious altitude-related symptoms require urgent assessment and may necessitate descent. Appropriate travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended. 12. Can I customise or book a private 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek? Yes. The Great Hikes can discuss private departures for couples, families and groups who prefer to travel together on their own departure. Pricing depends on group size, preferred dates, accommodation arrangements, transportation and the services included in the package. Customisation may also be discussed in relation to the itinerary, additional acclimatization days, porter services and pre- or post-trek accommodation.
